Founded in 2005, Play On! is Charlottesville’s only all-volunteer, not-for-profit theatre company. Since it opened its first show in September of 2006, the group has presented over thirty plays musical and revues, including the Central Virginia premieres of Rent and Yankee Tavern, and the world premieres of five plays by local writers.

Play On! was created to provide both the theatre artists and the audiences of Central Virginia with another theatrical option; a traditional, mainstream theatre, specializing in Broadway-style musicals and beloved stage classics. In addition, Play On! has maintained a commitment to the development of new works, especially by local playwrights, and to hands-on performing arts education.

Play On! also operates The Theatre at Ix, its 170-seat auditorium in Charlottesville’s revitalized Belmont neighborhood. In addition to all of Play On’s own productions, the theatre has hosted the Charlottesville Ballet, the Skyline Harmony Chorus (Sweet Adelines), Bent Theatre Improv Comedy, the Whole Theatre’s groundbreaking production of Cry of the Mountain and a nationally acclaimed one-man show of the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe. The theatre is also home to the Charlottesville Writing Center’s summer youth workshops and has hosted numerous meetings of civic clubs and local businesses.

Now in its fifth season, Play On! continues to grow in reputation and community support. Attendance continues to increase each season, as do the number of local men, women and children who volunteer in the theatre’s productions. Over 400 Central Virginians have worked at Play On! in some capacity. We are particularly proud to have benefited from the talents of some of the area’s top actors, directors, musicians, designers, singers and dancers.
